The Network Checklist Before You Blame the App

When a Microsoft Teams call goes robotic, delayed, or starts sounding like two tin cans connected by optimism, the first instinct is to blame Teams.
And honestly? That instinct makes sense—Teams is the thing you touched most recently.
But voice quality is a “whole path” problem. Teams is just the last stop. The usual culprit is the network behaving like it’s built for email and web browsing… while you’re asking it to deliver real-time voice like it’s a live broadcast.
So, before you reinstall anything, restart everyone’s laptop, or start a new religion based on headset firmware, run this quick flow:
Is the network acting like a network that can carry voice—right now, under real load?
Step 1: Start with Call Health (because guessing is exhausting)
If you’re troubleshooting a call quality problem, you want one thing first: a readout of what the call experienced. Not opinions. Not, “it sounded bad.” Something measurable.
During a call or meeting, check Call Health (or, your admin tooling if you’re looking at it centrally). You’re looking for four metrics that tell the story faster than a 30-message chat thread:
- Latency (delay)
- Jitter (timing variance)
- Packet loss (missing pieces)
- Bitrate (how much the call is being fed)
Think of this as a pulse check. Once you see which vital sign is off, you know where to look next.
Step 2: Latency — “Why does it feel like we’re talking over each other?”
High latency turns normal conversation into a weird rhythm game. People start interrupting each other, not because they’re rude, but because the audio arrives late and everyone’s brain tries to compensate.
Here’s what makes latency tricky: it might be fine most of the day, then awful during a specific window. And the “specific window” often happens to be… when everyone is working.
What to look for (without overthinking it):
- Does it happen only at one location or across the company?
- Is it worse during peak business hours?
- Does it improve immediately when you switch from Wi-Fi to wired?
What latency problems often mean in real life:
- The internet circuit is congested, or routing to Microsoft’s edge isn’t great
- The firewall/router is overloaded and introducing delay
- Wi-Fi contention is adding delay before packets even leave the building
A simple sanity test:
- Try the same call on wired vs. Wi-Fi
- Compare peak vs. off-peak behavior
- If you have multiple links, compare results across each link

That’s because jitter isn’t about how much data you can move. It’s about whether voice packets arrive evenly.
Jitter loves three things:
- Wi-Fi
- busy uplinks
- networks that treat voice like it’s just another file download
What to notice first:
- Is it noticeably worse on Wi-Fi?
- Does it get worse when people are uploading (cloud sync, backups, large file sends)?
- Does it show up when the office is full and everyone’s on calls?
A useful mental model:
Voice needs a smooth lane. If traffic is constantly cutting in front of it—or the lane is getting jammed—voice doesn’t degrade gracefully. It gets glitchy fast.
Quick ways to confirm you’re dealing with jitter:
- Take the same user, same call, and move them from Wi-Fi to wired.
- If it improves immediately, you didn’t “fix Teams.” You found the real battlefield.
Full-stack tie-in:

Step 5: Bitrate — “Are we starving the call?”
Bitrate is the “did we actually feed the call what it needs?” question. When bitrate drops, quality drops, even if everything else looks okay.
This usually shows up when:
- the office is busy and concurrency spikes (lots of calls at once),
- upload gets saturated (the forgotten bottleneck), or
- voice is competing with video, file sync, backups, and whatever else decided to go loud today.
The practical takeaway:
If bitrate is collapsing at certain times, you don’t necessarily need “more internet” everywhere. You need more headroom where it matters—and ideally a way to keep voice from getting muscled out when traffic gets heavy.
Step 6: The brownout problem — “Up isn’t the same as usable”
Most Teams calling issues aren’t full outages. They’re brownouts: the network is technically running, but it’s not stable enough for real-time media.
That’s why “it’s fine right now” can be misleading. Users don’t experience averages—they experience the 10 minutes the call went sideways while a big upload was happening.
So, if you want troubleshooting to move quickly, capture a few basics when it’s happening:
- When (timestamp)
- Where (site / VLAN / Wi-Fi vs wired)
- What Call Health showed (latency, jitter, loss, bitrate)
That turns, “Teams is bad”, into something fixable, like:
“Site B is hitting uplink congestion at 10:30am and voice quality degrades.”
And, once you’ve got that sentence, you’re out of guesswork mode.

- QoS / traffic prioritization status (if configured)
- Decide the Right “Fix Path”

- Location/site
