A Site Readiness Guide (Before You Move Numbers and Users)

Rolling out Teams Phone across multiple sites sounds straightforward: enable users, port numbers, train staff, done.
In reality, voice has a way of finding every weak link you didn’t know you had.
Because Teams Phone isn’t just a “new phone system.” It’s a real-time workload riding on your network—across WAN links, Wi-Fi, firewalls, and everything that gets busy at exactly 10:30am.
So before you migrate numbers and users, the best question to ask is:
Are our sites actually ready to carry voice like a first-class workload?
So let’s walk through what to validate—without turning it into a three-month science project.
The rollout mindset: treat “site readiness” like risk management
A good Teams Phone rollout isn’t only about feature enablement. It’s about preventing the common failure mode:
“Teams Phone works… except at the sites where it matters most.”
Site readiness is your way to avoid that story by doing two things:
- Build a predictable baseline (so voice quality is consistent), and
- Decide where you need extra resiliency (so outages don’t become business events).
Step 1: Start with a simple site inventory (yes, boring—also necessary)

Step 3: WAN design: don’t let voice ride the worst path
Multi-site rollouts often fail quietly at the WAN layer—especially if sites use different ISPs, different router configs, or inconsistent routing behavior.
Teams Phone tolerates a lot, but it doesn’t tolerate variable paths well.
What to validate
- Are sites consistently routed in a way that avoids “random” internet paths?
- Do you have policy-based routing or application prioritization in place?
- Can you see and compare link performance across sites?

- Are critical devices (conference rooms, shared phones) positioned for stable coverage?
Practical move: Establish a “wired baseline.” If calls are clean on wired and messy on Wi-Fi, you don’t have a Teams problem—you have a wireless readiness problem.
